Important to remember:
- Water Conservation – reduce volume by using low flow toilets, spread laundry out throughout the week
- Don’t flush – klenex, unused meds, oils/grease or wash paint brushes, minimize garbage disposals
- Keep vehicles off tank and drainfield and don’t ride snowmobile over in the winter (pushes frost down)
- Winterize – insulate (tall grass, snow, insulation, etc) and if away for week, based on snow conver, consider tank heater to prevent freezing
Wells
- If deep well, have tested for fecal and nitrate
- If shallow/sand point; chlorinate in spring, have well tested for fecal and nitrate and/or consider point of use treatment for drinking
Yard Best Management Practices (BMP):

- List of plants that will increase infiltration for low lying areas on your property which seems to pond after rainfalls. These plants will bust the soil up so it infiltrates faster and decreases or eliminates the ponding.
